Physical Appearance

Sergeant Major Breck Torgisson, 43, is a grizzled, solidly built soldier with a russet complexion, close-cropped salt and pepper hair, and intense chestnut eyes that have encountered the harsh realities of combat. A slicing scar runs from his left temple to the opposite cheek over a smashed nose. His rugged countenance is generally tinged with a cynical half-grin.

Background

Breck grew up in Buccaneer’s Den to a family of vicious pirates, surrounded by bloodshed and shifting allegiances. After his father drowned during a stormy sea battle, his mother escaped the interior with what treasure remained, squandering it all on alcohol. To survive as a homeless 14-year-old, Breck sold his sword to more nefarious mercenary organizations. However, after seeing a horrible massacre of peasants during a borderland assault, Breck became tired of unprincipled slaughter. He walked a moral tightrope, serving progressively more ethical companies until he was offered the noble purpose he desired under the Silver Serpent banner, and the professional armies they often employed. Breck’s stoic professionalism during years of dangerous missions qualified him for promotion to sergeant major over a large number of seasoned infantry troops in the newly formed Green Company Charter.

Personality Traits

Breck talks in gravelly tones with hints of old sea cant that contrast with military precision. He approaches problems pragmatically rather than idealistically. Breck analyzes protocols situationally, focusing on foavorable outcomes rather than following mindless conformity, just for the sake of it. When confronted with unredeemable evil, he weighs mercy against pragmatic harshness.

Behaviors & Relationships

Breck socializes willingly but avoids overfamiliarity with troops, which could jeopardize leadership impartiality. He evaluates with a sarcastic wit, admiring bravery and competence regardless of etiquette. Breck is drawn to dynamic characters that show themselves despite flaws. When confronted with the willfully spiteful, he becomes mean-spirited.

Motivations & Goals

Weary of aimlessness, Breck seeks to atone for past misdeeds through martial talent deeply rooted in the order’s moral missions. Rather than further fueling predatory turmoil, he concentrates on carefully obtaining strategic triumphs with just enough force to secure the objective.

Complexity

Breck is still haunted by the faces of innocents slaughtered by his blade. He still struggles with maintaining control and inflicting unnecessary pain.

Secrets

Breck hasn’t totally resolved his remorse over his mother’s tragic end, which occurred after his disappearance failed to stop her self-destruction. Her fate taught him that the world is cruel to those who are unable to control their internal demons.
